Happy Birthday Janis

Virtually London (lite) would like to wish dj Janis Short a very Happy Birthday! It was a working birthday yesterday for Janis, as she dj'd for two whole sets, one at her own club The Hangout, and then following on at the West End Club. Janis is a brilliant dj and she kept the party rolling, everyone had a great time! Traditionally Janis had a winged theme for her birthday, something special to her. Clive did a fantastic job decorating the West End Club for Janis's birthday and Hostess Cute greeted and looked after all the happy party people! Happy Birthday Janis!

Happy Rez Day Janey

Last night Editor of this blog, Janey Bracken was treated to a surprise party at the New West End Club by long time friend DJ Brie Janick and was joined by many of her other pals for a fun evening. It may considered impolite to mention a female avatar’s age so I will just say Janey was up FOUR it he he !! Hope you had a great day Janey :-))

I Can't Believe it's 4 Years in SL

Phew!! What a day! yesterday I reached my fourth Rez Day and usually I let the day go by quietly, but it wasn't to be like that this year. My friend Eliza Janus (who took the beautiful black and white picture above), had other plans and she asked me over to her wonderful new Magic Valley land where she treated me to a lovely time, including giving me a special cake with candles! I had gone to two CNN meetings today after seeing Eliza and both Henry and Nicole from CNN wished me a happy day. Then to my surprise Brie, Cute and Clive put on a Rez Day party for me included in the trivia theme at the West End Club (and I actually got one question right! I just pipped Pink at the post, but she beat me by getting another one right, so she knew two answers and I only knew one! Well done Pink!). All in all it was a Rez Day to remember and 4 years is quite a long time. I've written a little bit about my SL life in my latest CNN report. Many thanks to all my friends for your best wishes, lots of love to you all for giving me a great day!

New Hostess Bev Foxdale at the West End Club

Welcome to Bev Foxdale who has just started work at the West End Club as a hostess. Bev was hosting a jungle themed evening on Sunday, and dj Corolla Korobase played some great songs. Clive had turned the club into a steamy jungle forest and everyone was having a great time. Congratulations on your new job Bev!

The Ten Bells Pub

Black Mary didn’t take kindly to other women standing on her pitch outside the Ten Bells Pub. Also known as Marie Jeanette Kelly, Fair Emma, Ginger or by her best known name Mary Jane Kelly, poor Mary was to become the final victim of Jack the Ripper. Mary regularly drank in the Ten Bells Pub as did Annie Chapman another Ripper victim. Did the Ripper drink in the pub too? Well, we’ll never know, but it’s a possibility. Spooks Blackburn, pictured above, has re-created The Ten Bells Pub in Whitechapel 1888 and he gives information about the very interesting history of the London tavern. Spooks has installed a copy of a tiled picture showing a Victorian street scene from the interior of the real life pub. You can call in for a pint of beer, yes you can get a virtual pint in the bar! Sit and reflect on what life was like in those days, when the local pub was the nucleus of the area and a place for the poor to sit and chat and to keep warm on a cold winter’s night. Not for long for poor Mary and Annie though, they would be out on the cold streets plying their trade, trying to get a little money together for their rent and food. I wonder if the ghost of Mary hangs around outside the pub where she claimed her territory. One night as she stood there looking for clients a tall stranger approached “looking for a bit of business guv?” she asked…. Sad Mary took him home and the rest is history, Mary was Jack the Ripper’s last recorded victim.

Sarah's Amazing London Tube Station

The Tube Train system in London, along with buses, is the main means of transport for the highly populated capital, and those living and working in the city depend very much on the tube for a quick, though somewhat crowed, means of travelling. I’ve seen samples of Tube Stations in SL and I’ve been quite impressed with the ingenuity of the builds, but the very best one I’ve seen has just been built by SarahKB7 Koskinen and you can find the Tube Station entrance right next door to Sarah’s store entrance (SKB Astrodroids). The Tube Station Sarah built is so life-like that it takes your breath away. In the ticket hall, the barriers leading to the escalator open as you pass through and even have the little green arrows indicating which one to use, just like the real thing. Down the escalator you go, passing the colourful adverts on the way, you can click these to get the landmarks of the stores shown in the ads. When you reach the bottom of the escalator there are two platforms and even station maps on the wall. One thing you will notice though, the tube station names are a little bit different to the real London ones, they are all places from the Star Wars films! “Mind the gap” the voice booms out as you approach the tube train, yes Sarah has all the sounds and announcements heard on the real Tube as well, plus there’s a copy of the information board overhead telling you when the next train is due; so clever!
The real Tube, also known as The Underground is a massive network of train lines covering a large part of Greater London, Buckinghamshire, Essex and Hertfordshire and is the oldest underground railway in the world. Built in 1863, the original parts of the Tube were the Circle Line, the Hammersmith & City line and the Metropolitan line. The service was the first to introduce electric trains in 1890. Although it’s called The Underground, 55% of the tracks are actually above ground. At the present time The Tube is the second longest metro system in the world (the first one being the Shanghai Metro) and covers 270 stations with 250 miles of track.

Take a trip over and explore Sarah’s amazing London Tube Station and also take a look in her fantastic sci-fi store where she sells beautifully crafted robots and other items.

New West Enders Raise 7000 Lindens for Pacific Quake Fund

The generous patrons and staff of the New West End club donated the fantastic sum of seven thousand Lindens to the Pacific Relief Fund last night. Popular DJ Janis Short and glamorous host Isobel Byron pledged to donate all of the tips they received during the scheduled 2 hour musical set, which had an Asian theme and most of the party goers attending wore colourful and appropriate costumes. As is usual at themed events at this venue, club owner Clive Hissop designed and built a wonderfully authentic setting, in this case an Asian village for the enjoyment of the revellers. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this fundraiser, I’m sure the money will be gratefully received and put to good use by the relief organisations responding to this dreadful natural disaster.

Arabian Nights

Anyone who has seen Disney’s “Aladdin” knows that Arabian nights are “hotter than hot in a lot of good ways” and the New West End Club last Saturday was a great example of this. The club was turned into an oasis, thanks to genie extraordinaire Clive Hissop, complete with sand dunes, palm trees, camels (watch out, they spit!) and a vulture sitting on the sploder.
.
The evening was made extra special with the return of dj Brie Janick, who has been greatly missed over the past few weeks. Brie looked beautiful in a purple and turquoise outfit, and she played a wonderful mix of tunes including lots of Arabic and Arabic/English dance music as well as Bruno Mars, Paolo Nutini, Adele and JLo. Host cutewillow Carlberg, wearing a striking green ensemble, encouraged everyone to get into the spirit of the evening and “sheik” their bonbons, which they did.
.
Avatars dressed to impress, interpreting the Arabian Nights theme in a number of different ways. The ladies wore colourful costumes in bright pink, red, gold and purple. The men tended towards more neutral colours. Clive seemed to be channelling Lawrence of Arabia by wearing white, while Ed Follet chose a golden coloured outfit, nicely complimenting the camel standing nearby. Seany1235 Blinker went the chic sheik route in dark marine blue and white. Korky Vella dazzled us all with a couple of different outfits. He started off the evening wearing head to toe black, including a heavy face veil. Interestingly, he decided to accessorize his look with a banana. Korky exhibited great skill with the hoola hoops while still enveloped in his black robes. But later in the evening, possibly because of being overheated, he removed his robe and veil and continued to dance around energetically in only a kilt, all the while clutching his banana. A vision seldom seen, perhaps it was all a mirage. Whatever it was, it was certainly a night to remember.
