Visit St Paul’s – London’s Cathedral in Second Life

St Paul’s Cathedral is perhaps one the best loved London landmarks yet it is missing from the major London sims in Second Life (SL). However a virtual recreation by avatar Lian Hornet of this beautiful building does exist on the SL grid at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Grace/72/223/128. The exterior is a well built accurate portrayal and the interior ornately textured if sparsely furnished. It’s well worth a visit as part of any virtual London sightseeing tour.

In real life the Cathedral Church of St Paul the Apostle - to use its full name, has overlooked the square mile of the City of London since 604 AD. The current Cathedral - the fifth to occupy the site - was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710. Its predecessor was destroyed by the great fire of London in 1666.

The first Service took place in 1697. Since then the cathedral has been used for many great state occasions including the funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Winston Churchill. The Jubilees of Queen Victoria and King George V were also celebrated and most recently, the Golden Jubilee and 80th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. Royal marriages are usually conducted at Westminster Abbey, but that of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer was held at St Pauls in 1981.

The Cathedral has changed over the centuries reflecting the shift in tastes and attitudes, but the history of the nation is contained in the carved stone of the pillars and arches and is celebrated in its works of art and monuments. The magnificent mosaics are a response to Queen Victoria's complaint that the interior was dreary and dingy, and the splendid 1695 organ that Mendelssohn once played is still in regular use.

An American Memorial Chapel stands behind the High Altar in an area that was bomb-damaged during the Second World War. It serves as a gesture of gratitude to the 24,000 American war casualties who gave their lives in that conflict while serving in or from Britain, and was paid for entirely by the people of this country.

St Paul's remains a busy, working church where people come to find peace and to worship. It is a important heritage site which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, a symbol of the great City and Nation it serves.

Come and Watch the World Cup in Our News Shops

If you are on SL Viewer 2, which I know a lot of new people are, you don't have to leave SL to look at the football. We have an SL Web browser viewer in all of our three News shops and you can simply watch the football or anything else you fancy when you drop in. Clever fellow writer Ed Follet discovered some of the football being covered by BBC Sport on the internet, so he tried watching it on our shop viewer. So if you are using Viewer 2 drop in and browse to your heart's content!!

Heavenly Nightclub Opens in Little London

I attended the opening of Heavenly, a fabulous new Nightclub in Little London on Friday night. The spacious club is decorated to fit right in with the London scene with the Union Flag as its main theme. Movie stills of British cult television shows, film stars and legendary rock bands are displayed on the walls and there are comfortable lounge areas with pole dancers to entertain those who want to sit away from the main dance floor area. The club soon became crowded as owner Steve Rumsford announced the official opening as he greeted the new arrivals. Dj April McCoy did a fantastic job playing an amazing set of Britpop music as dancers Aleria Darkrose and Jani Silvershade played hosts to the clubbers. There was another reason to celebrate as well, it was Slave175 Viper’s Rez day. Slave danced with Raven Harcourt and they looked like they were having a great night - Happy Rez Day Slave! The atmosphere was electric and later I was joined by fellow writers Hibiscus Hasting and Ed Follet, we had a really good time and I can recommend this hot venue! The club is situated in Katrina Pascale’s glorious role-playing Little London sim, which I featured in an earlier article.

I caught up with Heavenly’s owner Steve Rumsford, to ask him about the new club and also his own SL story. I asked Steve if he had run any other SL clubs, he told me “No, Heavenly is my first club, I fell in love with it when I arranged events here, I am also Little London’s Event Minister, so when the opportunity arose I took over the club and have never looked back.” I wanted to know what Steve considered to be essential ingredients for a good SL club, he answered “Regular events and contests help, but the most important thing is having the right staff and atmosphere, this is something I believe we have in abundance with my staff Aleria and Jani and dj April Mccoy, these guys are the backbone of the club and are vital to a good nite.”

Heavenly had previously been run by Steve under a different club name before the re-vamp on Friday, and I asked him what a night out in the club was like, he said “Pretty crazy at times, some nites we get a lot of sim residents showing up and when dj April Mccoy is playing a set we can get pretty packed especially when we have a dance contest where people can win up to 500l for looking great, the club's 90s Britpop theme really draws a great crowd and with April’s rock music at full blast and Jani and Aleria shaking their thing, things really tend to hit the roof, but people always have great fun at the end of the nite and that’s what we are about.”

I asked him if they based the club on any real life London clubs, as the name did sound familiar, Steve told me “Yes we did, obviously for legal reasons we couldn’t name it properly and the design of the club is different to that of the rl one, but everything in Little London is based on rl London so people who hang out on the club scene in London will probably guess the name lol.” And are there any pitfalls to owning and running a club? Steve answered “As for pitfalls, for me there is one major one, if you want to run a club to make dollars and not for the community of the sim you’re in, then forget it, getting a club to fit in with the sim and make money takes a lot of time and genuine graft, you should be prepared to invest time and money and be patient for the first nine months.”

I asked Steve to tell me about his early days in SL and where he had first heard about the virtual world, he told me “I have been in SL just over six months and I had previously heard about it from all the media it had got from when that American woman became rich from it (Anshe Chung), so I waited till I got a new laptop, and as soon as I could I logged on to see what the fuss was all about, initially I was intrigued about the fantasy rp (role-play) and money making side of it, but I soon realized it had so much more to offer.” And what were his first impressions, how did he find SL? he told me it was “Daunting, very daunting, I’m sure everybody does, but because of my kind of inner geek from being an avid rpg gamer I knew I had to give it some time before I got the hang of it, and when I started getting the hang of rezzing, building and editing and not wearing boxes on my head when I wanted to wear a new item of clothing, I soon became settled, I was also lucky to stumble on the sim which is Little London and now my home, the people and Katrina got me settled and really eased me into it, without them it would of taken much longer.” I asked Steve if he visited any other sims he said “My love of America means I spend a lot of time in NYC sims, but they are not a match on Little London lol.”

As Little London is a role-play sim I asked Steve if he took part, as well as running the club, he told me “From time to time I join in with the Little London rp, Stephanie Asialla who is head of police here helps with that and does a great job, the rp is always free running and there are no tough restrictions so people can join or watch if they want, I also hang out with my good friend in Little London, Starbuck Jinx, he is a great laugh and we go dancing together, he also runs the pub in Little London, which I suggest you all check out lol!” (The Pub is the Queen Victoria, and yes I will check it out!!).

And why did Steve settle in the Little London sim in the first place? He said “Well I live in London in rl, so it made sense that my home in SL was here, Little London was the first sim I came across that was well built smooth running and unbelievably friendly, after spending time here and after getting used to things, I decided to make it my home, which is why I opened the club here really, as it wasn’t so much about making money, but creating jobs for the people here and generating tips to help with the running of the sim. Like I said before, a club has to fit in with the community and I hope that’s what I have achieved here.” And achieved it Steve has, Heavenly nightclub is a fantastic place to spend an evening, it has everything, great music, a brilliant atmosphere and exciting events and contests as well as the friendliest management and clientele you could imagine. Take a taxi over to Little London and treat yourself to an amazing night on the town!!

Simon and Nahiram Become Partnered

They only had eyes for each other last night! Nahiram Vaniva and Simon Seurat were celebrating the fact that they became partnered on the 23rd June. Janis Short held a party at her wonderful Hangout Club especially for them. Nahiram and Simon make the ideal couple, both of them are extremely popular and well loved by everyone who knows them in SL. Friends partied into the early hours with them at the Hangout and Virtually London (lite) would like to Congratulate Nahiram and Simon and wish them every happiness for the future.

Our News Team Are Made Welcome In The New London Village

The Metaverse London News Team (us lot!!) are privileged to have bases within some of the communities on which we report. It’s nice to meet people, and by having our ‘news shops’ people can drop in and not only pick up the links to our different news blogs, but also stay and have a chat if we are about. I’ve quite often written articles simply by bumping into people in the virtual streets or chatting to them when they come to visit, you never know, you might find yourself on the front page the next day!! You can also find a link to our CNN stories at the shops, which also tells a brief history of CNN’s involvement in SL.

We already have bases in the beautifully and lively Virtual London’s Kensington and the vibrant friendly Tropical Harmony sim, where you will find the West End Club. Now I am pleased to announce that we have a shop in the Doctor Who Zone - New London Village, kindly given to us by owner Kat Kassner and Manager Laredo Lowtide. I’ve already reported on the New London Village a few times and Kat and Laredo put in a lot of hard work to make it a brilliant place to be, both to visit and to reside in. They already have an established community and they have created a wonderful atmosphere there, making people want to come back all the time.

If you want to pay our shop in the Doctor Who Zone a visit, make the most of it and have a wander around to see a virtual Capital at its best, with landmarks like The Tower of London, Tower Bridge, Big Ben and Trafalgar Square, it’s pure magic. Of course if you are a Doctor Who fan there is the added bonus of playing out your favourite character, so beware you may meet a Darlek just around the corner! Kat and Laredo are usually around, so drop by and say ‘Hello’ Also if you want to have a sit down and relax with your friends, we have installed a ‘Truthball’ in our shop so you can get to know your friends a little better. The Truthball has a set of questions, which you take turns in answering and you are supposed to tell the truth!!! It’s great fun!

The Doctor Who Zone have their own fantastic news blog too, so keep up to date with all their happenings on their very own website as well!

Many Thanks to Kat and Laredo for accepting us into their unique and wonderful London!

This Week In the West End Club and Beating The Bull!!

Yaaaaahooooo!!! the cries rang out as the line dancers stomped around the West End Club in their cowboy boots!!! It was a barn dance and all were welcome! I heard a mooing
noise when I first arrived and there it was, a wild bull at the end of the dance floor waiting for us all to climb aboard and try out our luck at staying on him. I just had to try it, and hung on as well as I could, but the bull threw me off in the end. People were trying it all evening and I think Leone won, but I’m not too sure, he did seemed to have the bull beat though!! We all got a free prize for having a go, which was nice. Anyway, here's the schedule for this week at the club, just bellow the pictures:

Lady Gaga Tribute On Saturday and Mad Hats At The West End Club

Don’t forget we have a great night planned this Saturday when there is a Lady Gaga tribute concert at the West End Club (Starts at 2pm SLT that’s 10pm UK time). I was at the club last night when it was a 'best in Hat’s' contest and what a range of hats people have in their inventories, some of them nearly reaching the ceiling!! Nahiram who was hosting wore her Mexican hat to celebrate Mexico’s win over France in the World Cup!! There are some great photos coming in for the best in World Cup outfit/flags competition too, it’s still on, so get over there and you could win that 5,000 Lindens prize. I noticed one of the clubbers Jane had one of those Vuvuzela horns, looks like they made it into SL!! Maybe it's time for our virtual earplugs!!
